Fashion Sewing!

Those of you that know my story, know that I am at heart a "fashion sewer." Although I have come to love quilting, my first love is sewing garments and other fashion items.

Here at Sew from the Heart we are so fortunate to have some very talented fashion sewing teachers in Carrie Morgan and Barbara Grace. Carrie and Barbara teach on a very regular basis and can help with any and all types of clothing construction projects. This week we offer 2 classes on Thursday, "Up-cycle It" with Barbara and "Altered Attitudes" with Carrie.

Either of these classes is timeless. No matter your age or sewing expertise, you will learn to create clothes that you are proud to wear!

Other teachers that are talented fashion sewing teachers are Nancy Shamy, Vanessa Fromm, Carol Collette. Check out the great classes from these teachers, too!

Here are some of my tips for fashion sewing:
  • Find a pattern that you love. Make a muslin so you can adjust the pattern before you start cutting into your fashion fabric. Yes, it takes more time, but it is SEW worth it!
  • Have good quality sewing scissors and rotary cutters. (We do sharpen scissors!).
  • I use pattern weights more than pins when cutting out my patterns. If you prefer pins, make sure they are smooth and lay as flat as possible.
  • Pre-wash or pre-shrink all natural fiber fabrics. Yes, I do pre-wash most of my silks. Then you don't have to take them to the dry cleaners!
  • Use fine seam finishes appropriate to the fabric and the garment. I tend not to line as much, but lining and interfacing can be key to how your garment hangs and draps.
  • Have fun! Don't expect perfection, especially if you are a beginner! Love the process! This is one of the most important aspects of loving to sew. We all have to "un-sew" at times.

Come in and take some of our outstanding classes. We really do have some of the very best fashion sewing teachers here at Sew from the Heart!

Happy sewing,
Susie

Martin is going to BERNINA University!

I am attending BERNINA University this June. Some of the classes I am taking are:
  • The 7-series, Hands On - learn to perform all the relevant and common mechanical adjustments and maintenance.
  • Overlock overview - overview; internal and external workings of the overlock machine. Major mechanical looper and needle adjustments will be covered.
I will return with more information and expertise to troubleshoot your machine issues.

Thanks to so many of you that have brought in your machines and put your confidence in me! I am still learning lots every day. Please let me know if you have questions or concerns. I am here to be of service to you!
